AI is everywhere right now. We get it. You can open ChatGPT and ask it to write something for your website in seconds. Wix has AI website tools. Hostinger has them too. There are programs that can make pictures, write pages, come up with headlines, and even put together most of a website. So we understand why a business owner might ask, “Why should I pay a Web Designer when AI can build me a website?” That’s a pretty fair question.

The problem is not AI being bad. We won’t say this to you because it’s not the case. AI can be a great tool. ChatGPT can help you come up with ideas. Wix AI and Hostinger AI can help someone get a basic website online pretty quickly. If you are starting a side business and have almost no budget, that might be exactly what you need. The part we disagree with is when people start thinking that clicking a button and getting a website means the job is finished.

Here is where things get a little different. AI does not know your customers the way you do. It is unaware that everyone who calls for your roofing services asks the same three questions. It is unaware of what service line earns the most revenue and why clients pick you over your competitor on the other side of town. You have to give AI that information. When we build a website at CT Website Design, those are the things we want to know before we start putting pages together. Sometimes a ten-minute conversation tells us more about a business than a giant AI prompt ever could.

There is also a big difference between having a website and having a website that gets somebody to pick up the phone. We have already discussed this matter since it is always popping up. Where do we put the telephone number? What should somebody see first? Do we need a quote form here or is that just getting in the way? Should this service have its own page? A good Website Designer should be asking those questions. A pretty homepage is nice. A pretty homepage that nobody calls from is not doing you much good.

SEO is another place where we would be careful about letting AI do everything. Sure, ChatGPT can write a page about plumbers in Connecticut in about five seconds. So can thousands of other people. That does not mean Google is going to put your page at the top. Your website still needs good information, the right pages, local details, proper titles, good links, fast loading times, and content that actually helps somebody. At CT Website Design, basic SEO is part of every website we build because being online and being found online are two different things.

Then there is something nobody thinks much about until there is a problem. Who are you going to call? If your contact form stops sending leads or something looks terrible on a phone, asking an AI chatbot can sometimes point you in the right direction. But sometimes you just want a person to fix the thing. We have been building websites since 2011, and when one of our customers calls, they are talking to the same person who works on their website. We do not outsource the work. There is no wondering who has your project today.

We also think local matters. We are in East Haven, Connecticut. We know New Haven County. We know the towns around us and we work with a lot of Connecticut businesses. That does not mean somebody on the other side of the country cannot build a good website. Of course they can. It just means that when you hire a local Web Designer in CT, you can work with somebody who understands the area you are trying to reach. For a local service business, that can be pretty important.

So should you use AI or hire a web designer? We do not really think it has to be one or the other. Use AI. Have fun with it. Use ChatGPT to kick around ideas. Try the Wix AI builder. See what Hostinger AI comes up with. There are some pretty cool tools out there. But when your website is supposed to bring in real customers and help pay the bills, having an actual person behind it still means something. At CT Website Design, we see AI as another tool in the toolbox. It can make certain jobs easier and faster, but the tool still needs somebody who knows what they are trying to build.
