Now and again, somebody tells us, “I’m never going to outrank the big companies.”

Maybe. Maybe not.

The funny part is that they are usually looking at it the wrong way.

At CT Website Design, we are not trying to help a plumber in Connecticut beat every plumbing company in America. That would be a waste of all our time. We want that plumber to show up when somebody ten minutes away needs help.

That makes it a completely different game. The first thing we usually ask is simple. In what areas do you actually service?

You would be surprised how many websites never answer that question. They claim to serve Connecticut, yet they never bring up the communities they visit every week, like Milford, Branford, Guilford, Madison, and Wallingford. Google is unable to read your thoughts. Google finds it more difficult to connect you with people looking in such towns if your website doesn’t mention where you work. As Web Designers, we fix this all the time.

Reviews are another one.

Think about yourself for a second. When you search for a business, what do you do? Most people look at the stars before they even visit the website. Everybody does it. Five recent reviews usually beat twenty old ones from five years ago. They make a business feel active. They make people feel like someone else trusted them first. That matters a lot more than fancy marketing words.

Here is something else we see. Business owners love chasing huge keywords.

  • Roofing.
  • Electrician.
  • Landscaper.

Those sound great until you realize you are competing with tens of thousands of websites. Now compare that to “roof repair in East Haven” or “electrician North Haven.” Those searches are smaller, but the people making them are usually ready to hire somebody. We would rather help you get twenty good visitors than two thousand people who are never going to call.

This is also why we spend a good amount of time on Google Business Profiles. We make sure addresses, phone numbers, business hours, and service areas all match. It sounds boring. Honestly, it is. But boring things often bring in customers. Google likes consistency. Customers do too. A good Website Designer in CT should be paying attention to those details instead of only worrying about colors and fonts.

The nice thing about local SEO is that you do not need the biggest budget to make it work. You need a website that loads fast, talks about the towns you actually serve, and gives people a reason to trust you. That is what we build every day at CT Website Design. We are not trying to make you the biggest company in the country. We are trying to make sure the people down the road find you before they find someone else.
