Most of our clients don’t think about their computer setup until they’re already annoyed. That’s usually how it comes up. Someone emails me because they’re trying to change text on their WordPress website and things feel harder than they expected. Pages feel cramped. There are buttons everywhere. Nothing’s broken, it just doesn’t feel comfortable.

Much of the time, it’s a matter of screen space. Editing a page on a small laptop screen works, but it’s just not comfortable. The WordPress editor takes up room, the menu takes up room, and suddenly you’re scrolling just to reread one paragraph. When someone switches to a larger screen, like this 27-inch beauty on Amazon, the reaction is usually the same — “oh, this is way easier.” Not faster. Just easier to look at and focus.

The next thing I hear about is typing. Blog posts, page updates and small word changes. People don’t notice their keyboard until they’re using it more than usual. The cheap ones feel stiff. Keys don’t respond the way you expect. Same with the mouse. Clicking through menus all night with a bad mouse gets old fast. That is why I use this Logitech combo.

Laptop posture sneaks up on people too. Almost everyone works with the screen too low. They don’t notice while they’re focused, but later their neck feels it. Raising the laptop with a stand fixes a lot more than people expect. It’s not dramatic. It just feels better to sit there and finish what you started.

Lighting is another quiet issue. A lot of edits happen late at night. One overhead light, screen brightness turned up, eyes getting tired. A small desk lamp aimed at the workspace changes that. Nothing fancy. Just enough light so reading text doesn’t feel like work.  Or maybe you’d prefer the one my Wife uses with a built-in wireless charger

Desks get messy fast when people aren’t sitting at them all day. Cables, chargers, papers, whatever happens to land there. It doesn’t prevent you from editing your site, it just makes it harder, and it turn making it take much longer. When it’s cluttered, you put it off. When it’s clean, you log in and get it done.  The desk light above does help with it’s built in USB A & C ports, but adding a desk organizer can make a huge difference.  You can even combine an organizer with a laptop stand or one with a desk light.

All of this has nothing to do with working on your new website. The site’s already there. This is just about making it easier to keep it updated without dreading it. When editing doesn’t feel like a chore, it actually gets done. And that’s often the difference between a WordPress site that’s kept current and one that’s gradually forgotten.  The items listed above are ones that I actually use and recommend to friends and clients.  I have been a web designer for over 20 years and in that time, I have found what works best for me at the best price.
